Automated OPW tab sewing with layer detection
Two operator stations, sensor-based part detection and automatic bobbin change: this is how the Brother BAS-370K Extension sews mounting tabs onto large-format OPW airbag components, precisely and without manual rework.
Precision at scale: automated manufacturing of OPW airbag components
Large-format airbag components such as curtain bags place particular demands on sewing accuracy and process reliability in series production. The larger the surface, the harder it becomes to control material position manually during sewing, and the more important it is to have a system that takes over that control itself.
This is exactly where the Brother BAS-370K Extension comes in. At two operator stations, the component is secured using jigs with clamping fixtures that can also hold three-dimensionally shaped parts. A sensor system checks, for each mounting tab individually, whether the material and parts are correctly positioned before the seam begins. The entire sequence is managed by a Siemens S7 control system with a Sinamics drive, coordinating layer detection, jig feeding and the safety shutdown system.
During sewing, the machine processes the mounting tabs across the full width of the component, while an automatic bobbin changer keeps production cycles running without interruption. The result is a process that handles large surfaces without compromising on precision.
